: how to make you a star
I thought I'd put together a little piece on how
I edited one of the pictures for the SXSW
photo album I created.
Although not every stage or process is carefully
documented, it gives a good idea of the types
of things I did to make the end result look reasonable.
The important stages have each been shown in an
image, and I've tried to make it clear what I
did for each one.

The first step was to select the photo to manipulate.
I picked this one up from the fantastic Bradlands
photo album
(without his permission). |

The second step was to select an image to add.
I originally wanted to use
Dr. Evil, but I couldn't find a good enough picture.
Luckily this picture of Scott Evil was the right
shape and form; also Seth Green and Evan Williams
look strangely similar. |

Knowing the type of space Scott would use, I carefully
edited out
Matt's head by selecting the area and deleting. |

Using the smudge tool I built the chair up again
and created
an area of near-black where Matt's head had been.
Near black is usually more realistic than straight-black
in a photo. |

I inserted Scott into the frame and resized him
accordingly.
I positioned him so that his hand should be approximately
in the same spot as Matt's. |

Scott looked very green compared to Ev, so I pinkened
him up a bit.
I also defined where the left lapel of his suit
would lie. That bottle had to go. I also remembered
what was on Scott's t-shirt; a clown. |

I then extended Scott's suit-arm to reach Matt's
hand, putting in various
white lines to keep the flow of the image, such
as the lapel.
I drew in the clown's mouth for fun. Scott started
coming together. |

I then had a bugger of a time editing out the
bottle. At first I deleted it, then started redrawing
the clown. Luckily Matt's blue shirt matched the
clown's blue; unluckily Matt's shirt didn't have
big white swirls. I gave up on recreating the
entire swirl pattern and gave Scott some pants.
The whole thing looked flat and fake until I rendered
a shadow across it, and then it looked okay. Finally
I added Matt's SXSW badge, which luckily hung
the right way to how I'd rendered Scott's stomach. |

Finally I touched up Scott's body, arm, shirt
and the chair behind him. Then I blurred Scott's
face very, very slightly and played with the colours
until I felt comfortable with the result. I added
a few colours from Ev's head to get it looking
okay.
And onto the next one... |
