NOTE: We make no scoring allowances for Christianity's trumped-up "messages" to excuse, or its manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery. This is NOT a book review service. It is a book review analysis service to all people to tell them the truth about books using the Truth. The Book of Genesis is subject to exactly the same criteria and scoring system as is applied by CAPalert to movies, and that includes making no allowances for messages. It is not created to be anti-Christian or anti-Church, but rather to expose fundamental contradictions within CAPalert logic. It is essentially a Christian review model, derived from The Bible, and applied to The Bible. If you do not want the plot, ending, or "secrets" of the Bible spoiled for you, skip the Summary/Commentary. In any case, be sure to visit the Findings/Scoring section -- it attempts objectivity and is the heart of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model applied to this book.

According to the CAPalert model, if The Bible was released in the year 2000 and turned into a movie, it should be rated 'R', would contain inappropriate content for children and adults alike, and should not be viewed by anyone, ever.

SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

*The Book of Genesis* (R) -- Sex and violence on a global scale.

The Book of Genesis is the first in a series of works under the collective title 'The Bible'. Despite record book sales (sales in America increased by over 50% during 1999), The Bible contains elements which no child should be exposed to, including scenes of inappropriate sex (such as incest and adultery), murder, and mutilation. The Book of Genesis exemplifies such occurences.

While it certainly does not lack volume, containing 50 chapters (1,553 verses), this review cannot make excuses for quantity over quality. These verses are interlaced with a variety of aberrant behaviour, and while it would not be excusable even if it was punished, much of the characters' sins occur without consequence.

The Book of Genesis starts out nicely enough, with the creation of the world and scenes in the garden of Eden. However not long after the creation of the human race, the inappropriate content becomes most apparent. The first murder, for example, by a brother no less. It is not long before the audience has to endure scenes of mass-murder and destruction, angels destroying entire cities in one scene, flood destroying much of the world in another. Rape, kidnapping, and enslavement become regular occurences. Certainly, many of the incidents of violence are shown to convey spiritual messages, however as stated by CAPalert, the CAP model makes no allowance for messages.

It does not stop with the violence. The sexual content of the Book of Genesis is overwhelming. Central characters, such as Abraham and Jacob, become married to several wives, and still continue having sex outside of marriage, often with young girls procured by their own wives. A veritable knot of sexual inter-relations leads to jealousy and murder. And that's not even mentioning the prostitutes and concubines that many characters employ frequently (and sometimes share with their fathers and sons), and the generation of characters spawned by daughters bedding their own fathers while drunk. Even worse, the consequences of such debauchery and inbreeding are not dealt with by the book.

Deceit and hatred run rife throughout the story. Witness Rachel, who weaves a web of lies so thick it affects entire bloodlines of characters. Or Jacob, who uses trickery to cheat his kin out of inheritance. The intrigue is reminiscent of Shakespeare, so twisted are the motivations and morality of the cast of characters. Joseph wrongfully imprisons his own brothers in a foreign land, knowing full well they are not guilty. He carries out acts such as this with vengeance as a justification.
In future releases, the rest of The Bible goes even further. Graphic duels between David and Goliath. Sex and betrayal between Samson and Delilah. Talking plantlife. Betrayal by Judas. Stoning. Sex. Violence. Rejection. Thousands of humans murdered by the twelve plagues of Egypt. Much more prostitution. Idolatry. Pagan rituals. Conversations with Satan. Rejection of the word of God by many people. Slaughter in war. Scenes of death, suicide, and murder. One scene contains a vision of the end of the world. Were the CAPalert model applied to the entire text, no doubt it would set a new precendent for media containing inappropriate content.

The Book of Genesis contains content far, far worse than any Hollywood production, and the aberrant behaviour displayed within its pages are not suitable for children (and hence, according to CAP methodology, is unacceptable for adults as well). Considering many use The Bible not only for entertainment but for spiritual guidance, it is somewhat disappointing to find it full of inappropriate content. It is cause for no small amount of concern, therefore, when one contemplates the availability of The Bible, unabridged, in libraries, schools, churches, bookstores, and hotels the world over.

So many of our visitors seem to be relying only on this Summary/Commentary for a full accounting of the subject movie. This is not possible. For the best representation of the CAP Entertainment Media Analysis Model applied to this book, visit the Findings/Scoring section below.

FINDINGS / SCORING: Book of Genesis (950 BC) CAP Thermometers

NOTE: Multiple occurrences of each item described below are likely. Unlike many CAPalert reviews, this applies to the entire Book of Genesis, and not just 'as much as I could stand'. Even so, not every single incident is recorded, and readers should note that the final score would be far, far lower were every incident of violence, sex, and drunkenesss (and combinations thereof) recorded by the Investigator.

NOTE: As this review refers to written text and not a film medium, the CAP influence density rating was discarded (an average of incidents-per-hour). However there was scarcely a single chapter which did not contain multiple incidents recorded below, and in several cases the one verse contained several examples of aberrant behaviour.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
